Kids and disabled air bags how does it make sense?

I mean I understand the stuff in it is not good for children and theres a change they will be smothered. But the parent would take them out in time before they were smother most of the time or thats really bad parenting lol. Plus when I was a child had there been no air bags to support my face when we wrecked I could have ended up having a broken nose or worse. I was five and I never somothed from it I pulled myself off and my mom ran over to make sure. I don't understand I would think the benefits of having an air bag by far outweigh the risks.
